A Customer Not Present (CNP) transaction is a debit or credit card transaction made in the absence of the customer. Because no verification by signature or PIN can be made, banks charge merchants who wish to use this method a higher percentage fee, due to the increased risk of fraud. CNP transactions are common for transactions made over the phone or the Internet.
