Initial Public Offering

An Initial Public Offering (or IPO) is a corporation's first sale of common shares on a stock exchange. As capital raised in an IPO - where investors buy newly issued stock - goes directly to the corporations, rather than any one individual, the principal reason for having an IPO is raising capital for the corporation. Subsequent offerings of newly issued stock are called "follow-on" offerings.
