An underwriter is a financial service provider which acts as an intermediary between an issuer of securities (such as stock in an IPO) and the investors. A profit is usually made from the difference between the amount they pay the issuer and the amount they receive upon sale. In the event the underwriter is unable to find investors, they end up holding on to the securities.
